Choose how to take your IELTS test and book online
You can take your test at one of our official test centres on paper or on a computer and enjoy a wide range of IELTS test dates in Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, you can also take IELTS Online (IELTS Academic only) from the comfort of your home or any private space with a reliable internet connection.

What you need for your IELTS booking
- Make sure you have a form of valid ID (Passport or HKID/ Macao ID card) at hand, as you will need to input your ID number when you book your test. Please note that candidates under 18 years of age have to supply written consent by a parent or guardian in order to apply for a test place.
- Download and read our Information for Candidates, which contains important information about the test format, the question types and the test results.
- Pay for your test. You can pay for your test through our online registration system. We accept online paymetns by Credit Cards, Alipay China or WeChat pay China.
Important registration information for IELTS on paper
For Hong Kong / Macau test venue, If you are not a resident of Hong Kong SAR/Macau SAR, you will not be able to sit an IELTS on paper test. However, you can still take the test on computer so please do choose that option.
You are not a resident of Hong Kong SAR/Macau SAR
- If you want to book your test after 3 February 2025, you can only book an IELTS on Computer test, not an IELTS on Paper test.
You are a resident of Hong Kong SAR, but do not have Hong Kong SAR permanent residency; Or, You are a resident of Macau SAR, but do not have Macau SAR permanent residency
- If you want to book your test after 3 February 2025,
- For an IELTS on Paper test, you will need to show proof of residence before your test.
Acceptable proof of residence includes:
✓Identity Card (Non-Permanent), AND
✓e-Visa that is valid for more than three consecutive months and is valid on test day(s) (apply for HK test venue only)
✓Any foreign Passport + Slip of Authorization to Stay / Residence Authorization (apply for Macau test venue only)
For an IELTS on Computer, no proof of residence is required.
IELTS on Computer
We are pleased to announce that from 28 Jun 2026, The British Council and IDP will no longer offer IELTS on paper, all IELTS tests will be delivered on computer, providing a faster, more efficient and streamlined testing experience.
IELTS on paper and IELTS on computer have the same test format, questions and scoring. IELTS on computer also offers significant benefits to test takers at no additional cost:
•Faster results: Receive your results in under 5 days; typically 1-2 days
•Faster booking: Book your test up to 48 hours before test day
•More test dates: Access more frequent test dates
•One Skill Retake: Only available with IELTS on computer, you can retake just one part of test – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking

After you have booked your IELTS test
You will receive emails confirming:
- the start time of your test and the venue address
- your IELTS Speaking Test date
- your access to the free online preparation courses: IELTS Ready Premium
If you do not receive the email, please contact us no later than three days before the test. You can also view and print the information on our online system under the 'My Test' section after login.
Please note that date/time/venue/speaking format is subject to change. You may login to the Test Taker Portal using your email address and password to review your booking. Please make sure that you have included your email address correctly when you book your test.
