The right test at the right time

We know that students’ learning and assessment needs evolve as they grow. Our innovative tests are designed to cater to academic milestones, enabling students to perform at their best, whatever age they are.

Opening the door to opportunities for learners all over the world

The British Council engages with over 50 million teachers and learners of English worldwide each year  – teaching and assessing English are at the heart of what we do.

We have helped learners all around the world develop English skills, build connections and access opportunities, for close to 90 years.

Why you should choose our English tests

Our English Assessments for schools provide testing that lets students shine at every stage of their education.

Help them do their best:

  • Greater engagement – Teachers and parents know that engaged, motivated pupils do better.
  • Fast and reliable – We use the latest technology, including artificial intelligence, to get accurate results to students quickly and efficiently.
  • Supportive assessment – We don’t use tests that pass or fail students. Our tests measure students as they improve their proficiency.
  • Keeping parents informed – Parents can see what their children have learned and how they’re doing compared to their classmates.
  • Mapped to an international standard, the tests are aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) – Easily understand the results with detailed candidate score reports.
  • Not aligned to any specific curriculum or course – Testing can be easily integrated into existing systems.
  • No specific preparation required – Students simply need to become familiar with the test format.

We have created a quick guide on effective ways of approaching English language assessment in schools.

Engaging learners: Primary English Test (pre-A1–B1)

As Primary education comes to an end, students have reached a key milestone in their learning journeys. It’s the ideal moment to assess their level of English and inform future learning goals when moving into secondary education. Students do better when they're interested and motivated, which is why we designed our tests with that in mind. Our Primary English Test uses story-based animation to engage students so that they can do their best.

Developing confidence: Secondary English Test (A1–C)

Our test is designed to track progress as students move through secondary school. At the same time, we know how important it is to help students feel confident and supported. Our Secondary English Test draws from activities and scenarios that teenagers encounter every day. This lets students aged 13 to 16 feel confident, showcase their language skills and reach their full potential.

Flexible testing

Our tests are delivered on-demand, at a time, location and frequency of your choice. They can be fully outsourced to British Council experts, freeing up your time and ensuring high security standards. Optimising your time and resources required for English language testing has never been easier.

Scoring made simple

  • We use the latest technology, including artificial intelligence, to get accurate results to students quickly and efficiently.
  • You can showcase learners’ progress to parents in a simple, clear way,
  • You’ll also get an objective measure of the communicative language ability of your students
