British Council launches new Parent Plus course
Boosting parents’ knowledge to develop children’s English language skills
Primary Plus courses develop children’s confidence in learning English and help them gain life skills
22 June 2016 (HONG KONG) – Parents not only need to help identify the right English courses for their children, but they also have to strengthen their own knowledge and skills in order to boost their children’s learning. The British Council will launch its new Parent Plus* course for parents, relatives and guardians in Hong Kong – a first within the British Council’s worldwide network. This course aims to help parents to develop children’s English language skills outside classrooms. Additionally, our popular Primary Plus courses will commence in the new term in September, building up children’s confidence in learning English and equipping them with various life skills.
Tailored for parents of primary school students, the new Parent Plus course will offer age-appropriate materials that match children’s development stages. It covers four areas of learning: writing, speaking, reading and listening. Through this course, parents will be more informed of their children’s learning progress in order to help build up their confidence, develop their speaking skills for different purposes, and learn the rules of grammar in context and strategies for dealing with new vocabulary. Participants will learn foundations of writing and strategies helping their children write at greater length and with greater complexity using dictionaries and word banks. For speaking, parents will learn the basics of spoken language production and common areas of difficulty, pronunciation, grammar, word order and vocabulary in order to develop children’s speaking skills. They will also learn how to choose reading materials for their children and strategies for exploiting texts, decoding, scanning, summarising and reviewing. For listening, parents will learn how to choose materials to practise the skill and develop awareness of intonation and underlying meaning.
Primary Plus courses have been popular among parents and children since their launch. Designed by British Council experts with reference to the local school curriculum, Primary Plus is a six-level series of courses, module-based with age-appropriate themes and topics that match with child development stages. Children learn English skills and essential life skills: creativity and imagination, leadership and personal development, citizenship, critical thinking and problem solving, digital literacy, and collaboration and communication. Taking the example of a P5 course module, Making a Difference, students develop leadership skills during class discussions and a sense of citizenship while creating posters, planning and giving short presentations about an invention that can help the environment. All new students can receive a free Primary Plus folder and school bag.
The British Council also offers a variety of English courses for playgroup, kindergarten, primary and secondary school students in the coming September term. Followed the International Primary Curriculum Early Years, Kindergarten Regular English Courses have been revamped to prepare K1– K3 children for being in an English classroom on their own and train them to become independent learners. Moreover, the courses develop children’s creativity and skills including fine and motor skills. Children will enjoy learning the language and be keen to explore it more. In addition to Secondary Regular English Courses for S1 – S4 students, the British Council will offer a series of DSE Exam preparation and foundation courses for S5 and S6 students. They can choose the right course for them according to their competencies and needs. English courses for S1-S2 students use a topic-based approach to make grammar and vocabulary memorable, build students’ confidence and prepare well for DSE Exam. English courses for S3 – S6 students focus on developing their exam skills and strategies. Students will also do regular exam practice and receive individualised feedback that will help boost their score. Other English courses include Phonics, Phonics for Parents, Cambridge Exam Preparation Courses K2-S2 and IELTS Exam Preparation Courses (Academic module). The British Council is the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. We create international opportunities for the people of the UK and other countries and build trust between them worldwide.
We work in more than 100 countries and our 8,000 staff – including 2,000 teachers – work with thousands of professionals and policy makers and millions of young people every year by teaching English, sharing the arts and delivering education and society programmes. In Hong Kong, we have been doing this since 1948, giving people opportunities to learn, share and connect worldwide.
We are a UK charity governed by Royal Charter. A core publicly-funded grant provides 20 per cent of our turnover which last year was £864 million. The rest of our revenues are earned from services which customers around the world pay for, such as English classes and taking UK examinations, and also through education and development contracts and from partnerships with public and private organisations. All our work is in pursuit of our charitable purpose and supports prosperity and security for the UK and globally.
