Our ability to gain and share knowledge is central to good and fair health outcomes for those of us who are seriously ill. What does my illness mean? Should I speak about it with others or not? Will others believe me if I do? How we and those around us think about and act on these questions is vital to the success or failure of diagnosis, treatment, and wider understandings of illness.
This interactive, hybrid workshop will explore how we can do justice to ill people as knowers. The workshop will be led by an interdisciplinary panel of four researchers from the University of Hong Kong and the Universities of Bristol and Birmingham, two of Britain’s leading universities. They will introduce cutting-edge research on patient knowledge and how it intersects with issues such as loneliness, silence, and emotional regulation.
We will then invite you to participate in a discussion about these themes with our panellists online and other attendees. What do you think the proper role of patient knowledge is? Do you think people talk enough about illness?
This will be friendly and provocative conversation about an issue that almost certainly affect us all at some point. We hope that you’ll join us!
