Studying in the UK as an international student from Hong Kong can be an exciting and enriching experience. The vibrant culture, diverse traditions, and unique social customs of British life provide a wealth of opportunities for exploration and connection. Here are some fun aspects of British culture that I found quite interesting over the course of my time in the UK.

British Humor

As an international student, diving into British humor has been quite the adventure for me. It is filled with wit, sarcasm, and a delightful touch of absurdity. It took me a little while to understand, but I found that watching British shows like Peaky Blinders really helped me get the hang of it. Holding a conversation with local British people has also been a fantastic way to learn British slang and share a laugh. I’ve learned that humor can be a great icebreaker, and embracing this quirky side of British culture has truly enriched my experience here.

Afternoon Tea

Afternoon tea has become one of my favorite experiences since I arrived in the UK. Typically served between 3 PM and 5 PM, it’s such a lovely tradition that includes a selection of teas, scones, and pastries. I’ve enjoyed visiting different tea rooms that offer unique afternoon tea experiences—it’s a perfect way to relax and indulge in some British elegance. You’d be amazed at how much the Brits love their tea—it’s a wonderful way to bond and share in this delightful tradition.

Football Culture

Football is more than just a sport in the UK; it’s a way of life. Attending a match, whether at a local club or a major team like Manchester United or Liverpool, is an exhilarating experience. Even if you’re not a huge football fan, I’ve found that joining friends to watch a game at a local pub is a fantastic way to bond and soak in the excitement. It’s all about the experience and the shared moments!

Small Talk and Social Interactions

I’ve noticed that while British people might seem a bit reserved at first, they really value small talk as a way to connect. Engaging in light, polite conversations about the weather, local events, or shared interests has helped me break the ice in social settings. I’ve learned not to shy away from starting these chats—showing genuine interest in others is always appreciated and often leads to much deeper conversations.

Social norms & British culture

By understanding and practicing these social norms, it helped me understand British culture more and connect with people easily. You’ll find it easier to build a relationship with locals and navigate everyday interactions. You may feel there is a lot to learn, but truthfully, it is very easy to pick up along the way.  Just remember to embrace the journey, and enjoy every moment along the way!
